For Tim, painting was a mid-life choice made possible by a wealth of creative talent. In fact, the first 40 years of his artistic life was not focused on paint and canvas but on piano and strings. Tim began his career as a musician and composer. At age 40, Tim was a highly successful classical music recording artist, composer and adjunct professor in Philadelphia. And while Tim explored the visual arts as a youngster growing up in Indianapolis, it was music he chose to follow. But now in middle life, the desire to paint became strong.
Totally self taught, he first experimented in surrealism using his work to illustrate his album covers. But exploring the museums in Philadelphia led him to the work of the Impressionists and this new creative force consumed him. The result soon attracted gallery owners and exhibits followed. A new path lay before him and after exploring various art communities, Tim and wife Lisa chose Brown County in 2000 as the place to live and work. In his home based studio, Tim perfects his painting working in oils, and roaming the hills with camera and sketch book for his subject matter.
Tim's career has blossomed and now he has a cadre of patrons, a long list of awards and a spot in the Indiana Heritage Arts room at the Brown County Art Gallery. This fall, Tim's work will fill much of the Gallery with his masterwork, "Brown County State Park: Indiana's Crown Jewel" as 2021 Collector's Showcase.
Featuring over 80 paintings, the exhibit was created over two years during which Tim painted the park through various seasons and time of day. Each piece is meticulously documented and all will be offered for sale. Tim spent time capturing the many vistas in the park and visitors will be given a map of Tim's painting spots to see them in person.
The early Brown County artists painted those views as well and Showcase will feature select work by early colony members from private collections called "The Long View" curated by Jim Ross. We are working on some other events and special programs in conjunction with our celebration of the park so mark your calendar for our opening and watch for more info on dates and times.
Don't miss this extraordinary exhibit by Tim Greatbatch, all works will be available to purchase. Gallery hours: 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday Noon - 5 pm, free admission and free parking.
Nicknamed the “Little Smokies” because of the area’s resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Brown County encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges and fog-shrouded ravines. Glaciers from the most recent ice ages stopped short of the “hills o’ Brown,” but their meltwaters helped create the narrow ridges, steep slopes and deep gullies of Brown County State Park. Indiana’s largest park is a traditional fall color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland.
