Brown County Art Gallery News 2010

For the third time in less than a year, the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville has been given a major acquisition for its historic permanent collection. The newest piece is by early Brown County Artist C. Curry Bohm (1894-1971) and was donated by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Sexton of Indianapolis and Brown County. Paula Sexton serves on the Brown County Foundation Board of Directors.

Bohm was born in Tennessee but grew up in New Orleans. He moved to Chicago so he could study at the Art Institute. He and wife Lillian heard about Brown County and in 1920, they started making regular visits, eventually moving to Nashville in 1932. They made their home at several locations and eventually settled in a house on Main Street. They moved a barn from Greasy Creek to serve as his studio. (The property was torn down in recent years and a new building was constructed which houses the Brown County Democrat newspaper among other businesses.)

He was well known for his snow scenes which remain popular with collectors to this day.

The new painting, titled “Winter Greys” will go on display this fall.
