IHA Buys “Best of Show” in Memory of Dick Johnson

Show opens Friday night to big Crowd

A crowd of at least 300 people crowded into the Brown County Art Gallery Friday night, for the opening of the 32nd Indiana Heritage Arts Annual Exhibition and Sale.

Eighty four artists who created 129 paintings were juried into the show earlier in the week. Prizes were announced (see previous release with prize winners and photos) and it turned out to be a very big night for Spencer artist Ken Bucklew. Not only did he win the $5,000 first prize, his painting was purchased by the IHA Board of Director’s for the IHA Permanent Collection for $15,000.

The purchase was made in memory of Columbus businessman Richard Johnson who passed away over a year ago. IHA matched donors to come up with the purchase price in order to acquire the painting. Family members were on hand for the event. Johnson, whose family has property in Brown County, was a highly respected collector and supporter of the Brown County Art Gallery. The painting will remain in the IHA room at the historic Nashville gallery.

The show remains open through June 26th. Gallery hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sundays. All the paintings are for sale with part of the proceeds benefiting IHA. There is no admission charge.

People’s Choice Award Goes to Spencer Artist Ken Bucklew

It may be the most honored painting in Indiana Heritage Arts’ thirty two year exhibition history. “Overlook near Freedom” by Spencer artist, Ken Bucklew started out the IHA 2010 Exhibition and Sale at the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville, two weeks ago, by winning the Gold Brush Award and the top prize money of $5,000. The $14,000 painting was then named as the Richard Johnson Memorial Purchase Award by the Board of Directors who bought the painting to add to the IHA Permanent Collection.

After being seen by what show organizers estimate were 1,500 visitors over the two week run, Bucklew’s painting was voted the People’s Choice Award adding another $500 to the painting’s prize money. A second entry by Bucklew juried into the show received enough votes to place it in the top five of the exhibitions 129 paintings. Bucklew won the People’s Choice award last year as well, making him one of Indiana’s most popular artists.

“Overlook near Freedom” will make its home in the IHA room at the Brown County Art Gallery and will be on exhibit for the public to enjoy. The gallery is open daily 10 to 5 pm and noon to 5 pm on Sundays.

Indiana Heritage Arts Adds to Permanent Collection

For the second time this year, the Permanent Collection of Indiana Heritage Arts, Inc. has grown, now with the acquisition of a prize-winning painting by artist David Slonim. The painting measures 30x40 and is called “Bright Morning”. It was a major prize winner in IHA’s annual competition held last June at the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville. With help from the artist, the Board was able to acquire the painting which will be on display in the IHA room at the historic Brown County Art Gallery.

David Slonim of Anderson is one of America’s major emerging artists with works represented in museums and galleries in both the Midwest and West. He is also a well known illustrator and author of children’s books.

IHA has been collecting the work of Indiana’s top painters for the past several years with a mission of developing a Permanent Collection of the state’s top heritage style painters. Earlier this year, a painting by Bedford artist Thom Robinson was added. A fund has been set up with the Brown County Community Foundation to support the Collection. Donations are welcome and are tax deductible.

Indiana Heritage Arts is a non-profit group based in Brown County with the mission of supporting Indiana’s living Hoosier Masters. Permanent Collection Endowment Fund

As you may know, Indiana Heritage Arts has started a permanent collection of today’s living Hoosier masters. Our first two acquisitions, “Afternoon at Ogle Lake” by Timothy Greatbatch and “Portrait of Fred Rigley” by John Michael Carter, are on display in the IHA room at the Brown County Art Gallery.

Now the IHA board has set up an irrevocable agency fund with the Brown County Community Foundation to care for the collection. Our opening balance exceeds $4,500, all donated by current board members. The fund not only allows IHA to care for the paintings it owns, but can be used for future purchases, insurance, display costs and other educational projects, as approved by the board.

The Brown County Community Foundation will invest and manage the fund. Right now, costs are very low as the permanent collection holds just two paintings, but they will become more significant as the collection grows. The advantage of an endowment fund is that the money contributed to it will generate income each year in perpetuity to ensure the proper maintenance and display of the collection. .

Each $1,000 of principal in the endowment will normally generate at least $50 of income annually to IHA for the collection. The IHA Board of Directors is hopeful that many of our members will be enthusiastic about the fund and will support it with contributions. Even a modest donation by many people can make a huge difference. You will find a check off box on your member renewal form that makes it easy for you to contribute to this effort. Simply add the amount to your annual membership fees and we will forward it on to the endowment fund at the Community Foundation.

You can also donate directly to the Brown County Community Foundation, Inc. with a notation on the face of the check that it is for the “IHA Permanent Art Collection Endowment Fund”, PO Box 191, Nashville, Indiana, 47448
