The Pigs are Back

peoples choice award Indiana Heritage Arts has made another addition to its Permanent Collection by purchasing the “People’s Choice Award,” painting from its 2006 Exhibition and Sale. The painting is “Three Sows A’Snoozing” by Winchester, Indiana artist Robert Farlow.

Donations from patrons and a generous price reduction from the artist made it possible for IHA to obtain one of the most popular paintings the group has ever exhibited. The IHA board decided several years ago to begin collecting the work of Indiana’s current heritage style artists. The paintings are on exhibit in the IHA room at the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville. In addition, work from various IHA artists are on sale in the Gallery as well.

Mr. Farlow is a well-known artist and teacher from Northern Indiana and has been a regular prize winner in IHA’s yearly exhibition. During the two week run of the 2006 exhibition, visitors voted on their favorite painting. “Three Sows A’Snoozing” not only won the award but had the highest vote total of any previous exhibit. IHA is a non-profit group based in Brown County and holds one of the Mid-West’s largest art competitions each June in Nashville, offering over S70,000 in prize money and purchase awards each year.

The painting can be seen during regular gallery hours which are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5pm and on Sundays from noon to 5.

Permanent Collection Endowment Fund

As you may know, Indiana Heritage Arts has started a permanent collection of today’s living Hoosier masters. Our first two acquisitions, “Afternoon at Ogle Lake” by Timothy Greatbatch and “Portrait of Fred Rigley” by John Michael Carter, are on display in the IHA room at the Brown County Art Gallery.

Now the IHA board has set up an irrevocable agency fund with the Brown County Community Foundation to care for the collection. Our opening balance exceeds $4,500, all donated by current board members. The fund not only allows IHA to care for the paintings it owns, but can be used for future purchases, insurance, display costs and other educational projects, as approved by the board.

The Brown County Community Foundation will invest and manage the fund. Right now, costs are very low as the permanent collection holds just two paintings, but they will become more significant as the collection grows. The advantage of an endowment fund is that the money contributed to it will generate income each year in perpetuity to ensure the proper maintenance and display of the collection. .

Each $1,000 of principal in the endowment will normally generate at least $50 of income annually to IHA for the collection. The IHA Board of Directors is hopeful that many of our members will be enthusiastic about the fund and will support it with contributions. Even a modest donation by many people can make a huge difference. You will find a check off box on your member renewal form that makes it easy for you to contribute to this effort. Simply add the amount to your annual membership fees and we will forward it on to the endowment fund at the Community Foundation.

You can also donate directly to the Brown County Community Foundation, Inc. with a notation on the face of the check that it is for the “IHA Permanent Art Collection Endowment Fund”, PO Box 191, Nashville, Indiana, 47448
