Brown County Indiana Art Gallery Artist Association's Featured Artist

Featured Artist August 2011

J. Rodney Reveal is the featured artist at the Brown County Art Gallery for August. A native of Noblesville, Indiana, Reveal showed promise as a skillful artist at a young age and his high school art teacher, Gordon Morrison, was instrumental in encouraging him to explore his talent. Reveal received a full painting and sculpture scholarship to the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, and later continued his studies at the Indianapolis John Herron School of Art. The painter also studied for several years with famed Indiana painter Floyd Hopper, whose influence can be seen in Reveal's urban works of buildings and trains.

Of his art, Reveal says "In my paintings, I try to translate my feelings of a place or an object onto paper with the same emotional impact that I receive when I experience it." Equally comfortable working in either oils or watercolors, Reveal explains "I have found that watercolor, with its translucent brilliance, gives a sparkle quality to the paintings and the spontaneity of controlled accidents lends a freshness I prefer. Recently I have renewed my interest in oil painting and am enjoying the ability of layering and glazing along with the texture that oil allows." His favorite subjects for painting are nature, Midwestern landscapes, and the American West. "Nature can exhibit itself through weathered buildings, old trucks, rusty train cars, and structural details." Reveal says.

The artist's work is represented in public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Brazil, as well as online at www.jrodneyreveal.com. He and his wife make their home in Arcadia, Indiana, where he is surrounded by inspiration for his art.
